Manche der mehr als 300 Verbesserungen in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard sind unscheinbar, aber nützlich: Spotlight im Netzwerk, iCal, hochauflösende Benutzerschnittstelle, AutoFS.
Spotlight sucht jetzt auch auf freigegebenen Netzwerklaufwerken oder anderen Macs.
Das iCal-Icon im Dock zeigt nun das aktuelle Datum, auch wenn iCal nicht aktiviert ist - in 10.4. Tiger zeigte das iCal-Icon als Standard den 17. Juli - den Tag der Produkteinführung. Als neues Feature nicht wichtig, aber auch nicht schlecht, ich hatte mich wirklich öfter geärgert.
Leopard löst die Benutzerschnittstelle höher bzw. besser auf, jetzt abhängig von der max. Pixeldichte des Displays. Apple bricht mit der 72dpi-Welt und das Ergebnis ist überzeugend: Auf einem MacBookPro - Bildschirmdiagonale 15,4-Zoll, 1440 x 900 Pixel, ergibt Bildschirmauflösung von 110 dpi - sind Icons etc. detailreicher und wirken schärfer (wenn ich richtig gerechnet habe: Displaybreite = 33,1 cm = 13,03 Zoll; sind bei 1440 Pixel rund 110 dpi). Auf einem 20-Zoll iMac mit einer Auflösung von 100 dpi ist der Effekt weniger offensichtlich.
AutoFS ermöglicht - endlich - ein störungsfreies Arbeiten auch wenn ein Netzlaufwerk nicht mehr gefunden wird. Der berechtigte Applaus ist groß, die “Innovation” lange überfällig.

Mir gefällt am besten die Funktionalität der virtuellen Desktops, die es bei Linux beispielsweise schon länger gibt.
Auch schick ist die neue Übersicht im Finder, z.B. für Bilder und PDFs (Apfel Y).
Am meisten gespannt bin ich allerdings noch auf die “Time Machine”, für die ich mir nun eigens eine externe Festplatte bestellt habe.
Vielleicht schaffe ich es damit endlich mal ein ordentliches Backup auf die Beine zu stellen.
Die Installation an sich über die Option “Archivieren und Installieren” verlief problemlos und dauert schätzungsweise eine halbe Stunde.
Bei der Option wird das alte System in einen Ordner verschoben und eine komplett neue 10.5 Basis installiert. Darüber hinaus kann man alte Programme, Benutzer- und Netzwerkeinstellungen übernehmen.
Einige Programme mussten neu installiert werden, z.B. VMware Fusion, welches einen Netzwerkadapter nicht mehr finden konnte.
Bestehende Bootcamp-Partitionen, die noch aus der Beta-Phase stammen, können aktualisiert werden, indem man Windows bootet und dort, von der Mac OS X Installations-CD/DVD die neuen Treiber installiert.
Um neue Features zu entdecken, empfiehlt es sich auch einen Blick in die kurze “Einführung zu Leopard” zu werfen…

Nach ein paar Leopardtagen: die Vorschau mit “Übersicht” (Leertaste oder Apfel-Y) ist hilfreich und nicht nur neu.
Time Machine arbeitet seit Tagen für mich und verbreitet schon ein sicheres Gefühl. Ich habe noch keinen Eindruck, wie schnell das Backup wächst, habe aber eine 500GB Platte für die 160er Platte meines MacBookPro vorgesehen.
Über Folder, Dock und Menubar hat ars technica berechtigt und herrlich pointiert gelästert: “Completing the troika of insane, unnecessary changes for the worse made to Mac OS X’s most prominent interface elements is the Leopard menu bar which is, inexplicably, incomprehensibly translucent.”
Und weiter: “Why, Apple? Why!? Was there something horribly wrong with the existing menu bar—something that could only be fixed by injuring its legibility? Like the folder icons and the Dock, it’s not so much a fatal flaw in and of itself. It’s what it implies about the situation at Apple that is so troubling. What in the holy hell has to happen in a meeting for this idea to get the green light? Is this the dark side of Steve Jobs’s iron-fisted rule—that there’s always a risk that an obviously ridiculous and horrible idea will be expressed in his presence and he’ll (inexplicably) latch onto it and make it happen? Ugh, I don’t even want to think about it.”

Tja, für uns war Leoard ein Schuss in den Ofen:
Netzwerkdrucker über LPD geht nicht mehr
Parallels funktioniert nicht mehr und hängt das System auf
und Time-Machine funktioniert nicht über Netzwerk
Die Unterstützung von SMB ist auch fehlerhaft…
Andere Hersteller wären schon für weit weniger gehängt worden.
Wie macht man noch ein Downgrade?

Parallels war noch nie wirklich gut, da habe ich nach ca. einem halben Jahr mein Geld zurück verlangt und bin auf VMware Fusion umgestiegen. Die gehen einfach professioneller an das Thema “Virtualisierung” heran. SMB unter Leopard ist murks, vorallem beim Eintragen der Workgroup, was nicht funktioniert.
Für Time Machine gibt es zu mindest einen hack; einfach im Terminal einzugeben:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Leider funktioniert Time Machine mit Netzwerklaufwerken unbefriedigend und scheint eher gedacht für den fröhlichen Feierabendnutzer. Parallels und VMWare interessieren mich weniger, Coverflow im Finder brauche ich nicht. Quickview ist hilfreich. Aber ich setze auf bessere Schnittstellen dank Core Animation, gut, die müssen erst noch entwickelt werden. Aber Apple ist dabei, den zarten Flirt mit der Unternehmens-IT zu verkühlen.
